Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Mitere Mitai Maori Dinner and Tour

We connect people with the beating heart of the world’s youngest geothermal valley, its unique history and legacy. We share how the world began! Experience spectacular volcanic craters, enormous hot water springs, beautiful geothermal features, rare and unusual plant life, brilliantly coloured micro biology and a wide array of birds. We immerse visitors in the stories of the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption, its people, and the resulting dramatic landscape changes that created the world’s youngest geothermal valley.

Enjoy views of mysterious and beautiful Inferno Crater which rises and falls as it heats and cools. See the delicate sinter terraces growing from minerals solidifying out of the hot spring water. Waimangu Volcanic Valley is home to Frying Pan Lake, one of the largest hot water springs in the World.

Brilliantly coloured microbes cloak the hot rocks. Tiny springs and geysers play. Immerse yourself amongst the rare and unusual plants that grow on the hot earths of Waimangu, amongst the regenerating native forests.

At the end of the walk you have the option of the famous Lake Rotomahana boat cruise. The youngest of New Zealand's large, naturally formed lakes, Lake Rotomahana is New Zealand's original tourist attraction. During the 19th Century, visitors travelled to Rotomahana attracted by the legendary pink and white terraces which were destroyed in 1886.
