Rotorua Duck Tours - City and lake Tour

Rotorua Duck Tours - City and lake Tour

The unique 90-minute sightseeing adventure takes place on land and water, on-board our WWII amphibious Duck. Unlike any other tour in Rotorua, the duck tour is the best way to see the city and experience the beauty of the surrounding lake district all at once. Our Duck Tours begin right in the heart of the city where you will discover the sights and sounds, and learn all about the rich history and diversity that makes Rotorua such a unique destination. With your conDUCKtor you will venture out of town to the spectacular lake's district where you will see magnificent views of Mt Tarawera and "SPLASHDOWN" into Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Okareka.

Local Tips

You can bring non-alcoholic drinks and snack on board and enjoy these while on tour, provided you dispose of your packaging thoughtfully. Also during hot days in summer, bring your swimming togs and towel - you might get a chance for a quick swim in one of the lakes.

The weather here in New Zealand can be very changeable, so please bring warm clothing. In winter, gloves, hats and thermals are recommended. The sides of the Duck fold down to keep the cold out, and we have blankets on board during winter. Do not forget your camera, as there are plenty of opportunities to get some great snaps!

Te Wairoa the Buried Village

Te Wairoa the Buried Village

Te Wairoa the Buried Village

Established by a Missionary in 1850, the village was home to both Maori and European. Over time is became the birthplace of NZ tourism, as the gateway to the world famous Pink and White Terraces. On June the 10th 1886, Mount Tarawera erupted violently, and Te Wairoa was buried under metres of hot sticky volcanic mud. Over 150 lives were lost, the homeless moved away, and the village lay deserted. The destruction of the Pink and White Terraces meant that tourism in the area was over.  The land was purchased by the Smith family where the Buried Village was discovered.

Local Tips

The Buried Village is a historic site with an informative museum expanding on information from the history to the present. This is a lovely walk around the premise for reading letters exchanged between England and NZ after the eruption.

Down the back there is a lovely walk to a magnificent waterfall. The track is steep, but short and well worth it.

The cafe is styled on times gone by, giving that theme of what it was like in those days. The food is beautiful, and it's nice to try the Devonshire tea. There is also a small playground to keep the little kids entertained.
